The mission of the The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University (AMS) Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology is to provide state-of-the-art care to patients, educate the generation of leaders in Interventional Radiology, and to perform research that will lead to improvements in Interventional Radiology. Delivering appropriate, expert, and timely clinical care is the primary focus of the section. The section has a total of 6 angiography units, 4 CT units, and multiple US machines that are used to achieve our objectives. Our staff consists of 11 IR Faculty, 3 NIR Faculty, and 8 (or more) mid-level providers. All Faculty have academic appointments at the AMS of Brown University. Staff members implement and improve upon on cutting-edge interventional techniques. They are leaders in the development and study of new or improved IR techniques, IR education, and burgeoning areas such as artificial intelligence and 3-Dimensional therapy planning. Several staff members serve as journal reviewers, editorial board members, ABR/ACR CME developers, and in leadership positions for specialty societies such as SIR and APDIR. The division devotes significant energy to medical education with faculty participating and leading in the education of medical students, residents from varied specialties, and IR/DR trainees.
The division performs the full spectrum of body, arterial, and venous interventions and interprets non-invasive arterial studies, as well as peripheral CTA and MRA. Division areas of interest/expertise include interventional oncology, advanced venous interventions, hepatobiliary interventions, and IR education. Trainees enjoy the opportunity to work in a variety of acute and non-acute (Clinic type) care settings. The division provides coverage for the Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and Women and infant’s Hospital.
Rhode Island Hospital (RIH), a 719-bed acute care hospital, is the main academic medical center for the Brown. RIH is the largest hospital in Rhode Island. It is a major research with over $50 million annually in external research funding. The 247-bed Miriam Hospital is a major teaching affiliate for Brown and provides a broad range of primary, secondary, and tertiary medical services. The 87-bed Hasbro Children’s Hospital is the state’s premier advanced pediatric specialty care facility and boasts the only pediatric emergency department and Level I trauma center in southeastern New England. Women & Infants Hospital is the largest obstetrical facility in Rhode Island and the tenth largest in the United States. The hospital specializes in Obstetrical, Gynecological, Gyn Oncology, and Neonatal care.
There are numerous opportunities for learning including daily Read-In and Read-out rounds with attendings, weekly IR fellows conference, weekly tumor boards, bi-weekly Vascular Anomalies conferences/clinics, monthly IR and NIR M&M conferences, and quarterly IR Interesting Case conferences. Selected Hospital wide Grand Rounds and M&M meetings that are pertinent to IR are also held.
The breath of the division’s IR practice coverage provides a unique training experience with highly diverse patient care and procedural exposure. The division strives to provide comprehensive, cost-effective, and on-time IR care to the varied populations and medical centers we serve. It is our belief that this broad experience provides trainees with a background that will serve them well in future careers in all areas of interventional radiology including clinical, educational, and research positions.
