Emergency Imaging

High volume, a wide variety of advanced imaging studies, and the presence of a variety of subspecialists expose residents to a wealth of informative and interesting imaging and a variety of approaches to problem solving.

The mission of the emergency imaging section is to be as much a part of the emergency department as the radiology department, and to be a seamless adjunct to the care of our patients in the emergency room.

The emergency imaging section is the largest in the department with over 40 subspecialty attending radiologists covering on a regular basis, with five of these attendings covering each day. The section includes the emergency department of Rhode Island Hospital, which is the regional Level One Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center, and the Miriam Hospital ED. Both hospitals’ emergency rooms are extremely busy, performing many hundreds of imaging studies each day with a high volume of trauma radiology, neurovascular imaging for stroke, and advanced body imaging.

Because of this high volume, with the wide variety of advanced imaging studies and the presence of a variety of subspecialists the resident is exposed to a wealth of informative and interesting imaging and a variety of approaches to problem solving. Our residents become comfortable with interpreting studies in real time and become expert in their interpretations of complex cases.
