Our neurointerventional radiology service is a multidisciplinary team composed of radiologists and neurosurgeons. We perform nearly 700 procedures per year – over 250 are mechanical thrombectomy (a procedure with directly removes a clot obstructing a blood vessel) for emergent large vessel occlusion (ELVO) stroke.
The service enjoys access to two modern biplane neuroangiography suites. One of these suites is strategically located in the Rhode Island Hospital emergency department (first in the world) to keep stroke onset to recanalization (vessel open) times for the population we serve in Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts as short as possible thereby improve outcomes.
The neurointerventional team is world-renowned for their innovative techniques and approach to stroke care delivery. Furthermore, the service has consistently been top enrollers in the most recent and celebrated clinical trials such as DEFUSE 3 and ESCAPE NA-1. We are now enrolling patients in ongoing clinical trials such as TIMELESS, ESCAPE-NEXT and STEM.
The service functions with 1 neurointerventional fellow and a neurointerventional PA. Radiology residents are welcomed and encouraged to participate in our procedures, the management of our patients, and clinical research.
